Africa-Press – Angola. The Horizonte Ngola Kiluanje Theater Group presented the life and work of Angola’s first President, António Agostinho Neto, on Friday in Luanda.

The group performed at “Cantar Neto,” a program organized by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), as part of National Hero’s Day, September 17th.

The initiative also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Angola’s Independence, to be celebrated on November 11th.

The collective narrated the political and poetic journey of the Founder of the Nation, also known as “Manguxi” or “Kilamba.”

The event was enlivened by the Attorney General’s Office choir.

Speaking to the press, the president of the Sagrada Esperança Foundation, Roberto Victor de Almeida, expressed his gratitude and emotion for the tribute to the nationalist Agostinho Neto, who is also his cousin.

“First of all, I must thank the Attorney General’s Office for the invitation and express my satisfaction with the performance presented to us,” he stated.

He said the performance extols the qualities of the President, who, since his youth, fought for the liberation of the Angolan people.

According to the fellow nationalist, the group managed to sensitively portray various aspects of Neto’s life and political trajectory.

“The play reminded each of us of many of the positions he affirmed and defended, not only for Angola, but also for Africa and the world,” he emphasized.

On the occasion, Roberto de Almeida explained that the struggle for national independence was carried out with clear objectives and well-defined programs.

“Many gave their lives so that we can live in freedom today. This achievement, although painful, continues to be the foundation of the Angola we have,” he recalled.

According to the official, the ceremony reinforced not only the memory of the historic leader, but also the commitment to the values that guided the liberation struggle, especially among the new generations who, through art, keep the national history alive.

António Agostinho Neto was born on September 17, 1922, in the town of Caxicane, in Icolo e Bengo. He was an Angolan doctor, writer, and politician who proclaimed the independence of the People’s Republic of Angola in the early hours of November 11, 1975.

The former president of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Neto died on September 10, 1979, in Moscow, then part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), at the age of 56, due to illness.
