Africa-Press – Angola. The 4th Edition of the African Youth Games (AYG), involving 21 sports, is set to start on Wednesday (10) with the athletics competition, kicks off at 7:30 am, at the José Sayovo High Performance Center, in Bengo Province.
The schedule for the first day of the multidisciplinary event, whose opening ceremony takes place only on Saturday (13) also includes canoeing, karate, table tennis, badminton, beach volleyball and wrestling, scheduled for the period between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm.
Taking place until the 20th of the current month, under the motto “Youth in motion, Africa united”, simultaneously in the provinces of Luanda and Bengo, the continental competition brings together a total of 2,025 athletes and more than 600 technical officials, including coaches, heads of delegation, masseurs and timekeepers, representing 54 countries, and aims to stimulate the spirit of fraternity and African unity.
The meeting also aims to foster cultural, educational and human exchange between peoples, enhance the technical, physical and ethical training of athletes, identify the new generation of talents on the continent, as well as reinforce the Olympic values of respect, excellence and solidarity.
Athletics is the sport with the largest number of participants, with 364, followed by swimming (224), taekwondo (182), judo (173) and karate (165), while Angola has the largest delegation, with 165 athletes.
Among the largest delegations are also Algeria, with 151 athletes, Tunisia (137), South Africa (108) and Egypt (105), with the Seychelles Islands, with four, Malawi and Somalia, both with three, being the least represented countries at the event.
The African Youth Games are part of the celebrations for the National Independence Jubilee, which took place on Nov 11th.

Equestrian Sports and Golf (Mangais Tourist Complex), Fencing (Paulo Bunze Pavilion/1o de Agosto Sports City), Gymnastics (Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion), Karate and Judo (Cidadela SportCenter Complex Main Pavilion), Open Water Swimming (Alvalade and Ilha de Luanda Swimming Pools), Table Tennis (Cidadela SportCenter Complex) and Tennis (Kikuxi Vilas Club).
