Africa-Press – Angola. The National Assembly (AN) and the secretariat of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) signed this Tuesday in Manama, capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the agreement to hold the 147th General Assembly , in October this year, in Luanda.

The agreement signed by the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira and by the general secretary of the IUP, Martin Chungong, establishes the rules for holding the event, which must be fully complied with for the success of the undertaking.

With the signing of the agreement, Angola undertakes to carry out all IUP guidelines before and during the event scheduled for October of the current year in Luanda.

According to Carolina Cerqueira, Angola assumes the responsibility and commitment to, once again, dignify the country, holding an event that represents the weight of the Angolan parliament in the regional and international context, a strong, democratic, gender-sensitive parliament, engaged in the defense of ecology and, above all, one that responds to the anxieties, concerns and dreams of Angolans.

Carolina Cerqueira advanced that, for the beginning of the established tasks, an organizing commission had already been created and the main lines of action, the parallel events, had been outlined, also counting on the support of the IUP, so that the meeting in Luanda could promote and develop exchange and create bridges of solidarity, concertation, dialogue and, above all, action in favor of the well-being and improvement of the social conditions of the populations.

He added that the country will take advantage of the occasion to show its hospitality, its culture, as well as to promote tourism.

The President of AN also made known that, in human, material and technical terms, the essential conditions have been created, with a dynamic, participatory and engaged human framework and deputies who will show the experience of organization.

On his turn, the general secretary of the IUP, Martin Chungong, stated that the signing of the agreement represents the marriage between Angola and the organization.

For the official, Angola and its parliament are, once again, a demonstration of their commitment to the promotion of democratic ideals.

Martin Chungong added that the organization has already started to sensitize its members to be present in Angola, in order to participate in this event which will serve to address issues of common interest.

During the 146th General Assembly of the IPU, Angola gathered experiences from the coordination of the meeting in Bahrain, during a meeting between the President of the AN, Carolina Cerqueira, and the President of the Organizing Committee, Jamal Fakhro.

The Angolan delegation took advantage of the moment to collect detailed information about the organization of the event, “drinking” on the experience of Bahrain for the success of the conclave in Luanda.

During the IPU’s general assembly, parliamentarians analyzed the organization’s strategies on climate change, accountability at all levels, as well as transforming speeches into actions to combat climate change.

The approach also included reinforcement of climate legislation to reduce carbon gas emissions and support for a clean energy transition.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is made up of 178 national parliaments and 12 regional assemblies. It is currently the main parliamentary interlocutor of the United Nations.
