Bahrain: Angola joins the "My Parliament, My Planet" campaign

Africa-Press – Angola. The Parliament of Angola this Sunday joined the campaign “My Parliament, my Planet” launched during the 146th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IUP), taking place in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.

According to the theme of the campaign launched by the UIP, the aim is to mobilize parliaments and parliamentarians to act in the face of the climate emergency.

The IUP argues that climate action starts at home and parliamentarians must set an example before convincing populations to engage in actions to protect the environment.

The first part of the campaign encourages parliaments and everyone who works there to reduce their carbon use and be greener.

Parallel to the first part of the Campaign, the second part of the campaign will help Parliaments to intensify their action for the approval of adequate legislation, budgets and in particular the control of government measures with a view to implementing the Paris Agreement.

For the president of AN, Carolina Cerqueira, Angola salutes the campaign My Parliament, My Planet, for a more ecological Parliament and to intensify the initiatives to accompany and control the execution of the Executive’s policies in favor of the environment, of the reduction of the carbon emission in the framework of the Paris Agreement and the implementation of the UN Convention on climate change.

Reducing the use of carbon and the emission of greenhouse gases are other priorities, which will count on the advocacy of parliamentarians.

According to Carolina Cerqueira, Parliament will continue to encourage the strengthening of institutional capacities to accompany the completion of certification of forests and areas of environmental conservation, national parks and reserves.

Carolina Cerqueira reaffirmed the protection, conservation and restoration of nature, with more investment in the transition to blue and green carbon, capable of generating more sustainable development and boosting the circular economy.

He made it known that the Parliament will continue to plant trees both in terms of the institution’s spaces and within the scope of the various campaigns that are being developed by environmental activists.

It should be remembered that during the event, parliamentarians will analyze the organization’s strategies on climate change, accountability at all levels, as well as the transformation of speeches into actions to combat climate change.

The approach also includes reinforcement of climate legislation to reduce carbon gas emissions and support for a clean energy transition.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is made up of 178 national parliaments and 12 regional assemblies. It is currently the main parliamentary interlocutor of the United Nations.
