Africa-Press – Angola. The lives of black personalities, such as the writers Machado de Assis and Carolina Maria de Jesus, inspired a collection of anti-racist children’s books, with editions in Braille, by a Brazilian company.
Editora Mostarda’s project, which has already published books for children and young people about more than 20 black personalities in Brazil – which also included foreign personalities such as Ângela Davis, Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks, was one of the highlights of the 26th edition of the International Book Biennial of São Paulo, held this month.
Pedro Menezette, entrepreneur who heads Editora Mostarda, told Lusa that the project came from personal experience. “With my experience working with books, I realized that it was important to publish works with anti-racist content,” he said.
Andressa Maltese, editor and curator of the collection, added that the books they edit analyze some relevant social issues in the context of Brazil and the world. “Initially we started with the issue of racism and now we decided to bring black personalities. Today we have stories of 20 black personalities and two indigenous people. We will complete the line with 35 personalities by the end of this year”, she explained.
“We understand that by bringing references to children, they will be able to dream bigger and understand that these black people, portrayed in the books, also had difficulties and were victims of racism, but none of these difficulties prevented them from acting. and form anti-racist futures, as well as fighting the racist structure in Brazil”, he added.
