Africa-Press – Angola. A group of 14 British deputies visited, this Monday, in Luanda, the facilities of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), located in the Margareth Anstee building, named after the English diplomat and former special envoy of the Secretary-General of the Nations Nations for Angola, in the country’s first general elections, in 1992.
The delegation participating in the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), accompanied by the president of the institution, Manuel Pereira da Silva, toured the various compartments of the building and rejoiced in the tribute paid by the authorities to their compatriot, who died on 25 August 2016, aged 90.
Margaret Anstee was the first woman to be appointed by the United Nations to one of the organization’s highest positions, the responsibility of leading the United Nations Verification Mission in Angola (UNAVEM II), founded in 1991 and completed in 1995, accumulating this position as special representative of the organization’s general secretary, between 1992 and 1993.
During the visit, parliamentarians also received information on how the electoral process of August 24, 2022 was prepared in the country, as well as praising the level of organization of the CNE to carry out elections within acceptable standards in democracy, namely with rigor, freedom and transparency.
According to Tim Loughton, deputy for the Conservative Party, with the information received, democratic processes are designed with great responsibility and the CNE in Angola complied with the country’s laws, highlighting that it is a great honor for the United Kingdom to have Margareth Asteen’s name exposed in the institution’s building.
“During the presentation of the electoral process, the CNE demonstrated that it deals with these issues with great sincerity and transparency in ways that ensure that voters are well informed,” he stressed.
In turn, the member of the House of Lords, the upper house of the United Kingdom’s parliament, Lord Rennard stated that he had a good impression and is overjoyed by the important tribute paid to “Lady Margareth Asteen” who helped the establishment of democracy in Angola.
The 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) begins this Monday (23), in Luanda’s Marginal Bay, with the central motto “Parliamentary Action for Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”.
