Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, defended, this Thursday, in Geneva (Switzerland), the strengthening of the action of parliaments in local and global governance.

Carolina Cerqueira, who was speaking at the first preparatory meeting of the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments which takes place from the 16th to the 17th of May, also suggested greater dynamics in the defense of human rights and strengthening the rule of law and people’s security in the face of vulnerability to which are subject to situations of crisis and natural disasters.

He emphasized that multilateralism, principles and values ​​in defense of peace must be reinforced through diplomacy, solidarity and parliamentary cooperation.

In her view, the connection between governments and civil society must also be strengthened, the inclusion of young people in parliaments and the recognition of women’s contribution to decision-making, especially at a political level, based on UN resolutions. and the procedures that must be implemented by member states.

The leader of the Angolan parliament, who focused her intervention on the topic of the state of the world and the future of multilateralism, also reaffirmed the commitment of Angola and its institutions to the values ​​and principles of democracy.

It guaranteed the construction of strong and credible institutions, as was recommended in the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), which took place in Luanda from 23 to 27 October 2023.

Carolina Cerqueira reiterated that the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, which will take place in 2025, will take place in a context of global and regional crisis, which each country must face in the face of the challenges posed by the food security crisis, climate change , gender equality, for international and regional peace and stability.

The preparatory meeting will reflect on the current challenges of world peace, sustainable development and democracy.

Parliamentarians will also analyze the results of previous conferences, with emphasis on the evolution of interparliamentary cooperation over the years and the priority of the agendas of member countries’ parliaments in the face of global and regional geopolitical challenges.

The president of the National Assembly was elected, together with her counterparts from Côte D’Ivoire, Tanzania, Nigeria and Algeria, as a member of the Preparatory Committee of the 6th World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, representing the African group. Zambia participates in the event as a member of the Executive Committee.

The decision came from a meeting of the Executive Committee held in April in Geneva, which approved the proposals of the regional groups of the IPU, to elect the 21 members of the Preparatory Committee for the aforementioned conference.
