Africa-Press – Angola. Two artisanal fishing vessels with their respective engines were delivered to the cooperatives “Suku Okola” and “Tulavoka”, which operate in the commune of Gama, municipality of Catumbela (Benguela).

The donation, an initiative of the Municipal Administration of Catumbela, aims to minimize the difficulties that members of these cooperatives face in acquiring these means.

According to the municipal administrator of Catumbela, Cátia Teixeira, artisanal fishing owners face many difficulties in acquiring a vessel due to the high costs charged in the market.

For this reason, he explained, his department decided to support them in continuing to carry out their activities and also the women who depend on fish to support their families.

He also made it known that these vessels are part of a batch of five, three of which have already been delivered to cooperatives in the Praia Bebé commune.

Cátia Teixeira informed that these actions are part of the Integrated Program for Local Development and Combating Poverty.

Meanwhile, Manuel dos Santos Moura, head of the Suku Okola fishermen’s cooperative, who received a boat with an engine and life jackets, praised the gesture of the local Administration, as these means reinforce the already existing batch of artisanal fishing boats and will help in streamlining the daily activity of shipowners.

The shipowner said that, despite the scarcity of fish in recent times, some variety of fish such as horse mackerel, blacksmith and swordfish has still appeared.

According to Manuel dos Santos Moura, the cooperative controls 28 fishermen, who will continue to work to support the fishmongers who depend on this activity to support their families.

Former military personnel receive heads of cattle

The Municipal Administration of Catumbela also delivered ten heads of cattle, in the commune of Biópio, to a cooperative of ex-soldiers and widows.

According to Cátia Teixeira, 20 heads will be delivered, a couple for each beneficiary, in accordance with the Executive’s plan to support and encourage small businesses to boost the local economy.

The official said that the animals delivered have already been vaccinated and that each beneficiary will also be provided with an additional batch of medicines to help prevent certain diseases.

The municipality of Catumbela, the youngest in the province of Benguela, has an estimated population of around 200 thousand inhabitants and is made up of the municipalities of Sede, Biópio, Praia Bebé and Gama.
