Africa-Press – Angola. Thousands of validly cast, claimed, unused and invalid ballot papers, within the framework of the general elections of August 24, 2022, were destroyed, this Friday, in the province of Benguela.

The incineration of electoral and obsolete material from the General Elections of August 24, 2022 took place in the village of Uche, in the municipality of Benguela, in accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 122 of the Organic Law on Elections, one year after the ballot.

When intervening, the president of the Provincial Electoral Commission in Benguela, José de Jesus Ndala Carlos, said that the incinerated ballot papers correspond to a universe of one million, 201 thousand and 71 voters called to the polls in this region of the country.

The official said that contingency electoral registers were also burned, as well as obsolete material used during the last elections.

According to him, the National Electoral Commission and its local bodies across the country carried out this act, thus fulfilling a deliberation of the body, which took place on October 5th, under the Organic Law on General Elections.

According to the source, one year after the General Elections of August 24th, obsolete electoral material must be destroyed.

On the occasion, José de Jesus Ndala Carlos reaffirmed that citizens voted and elected their representatives for the V Legislature and the party that formed the Government, in this case, the MPLA.

“The elections were transparent, free and credible”, assured the person responsible to the representatives of the political parties with parliamentary seats invited to the event.

The MPLA won the General Elections of August 24th in Angola with 51.17% of the votes against 43.95% for UNITA (opposition), according to the definitive results announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

UNITA obtained 2,756,786 votes and won 90 seats in Parliament. The third most voted party was the PRS with 71,351 votes, which gives it the right to two deputies.

The FNLA and the PHA are the other two parties that also managed to elect two deputies each. CASA-CE, APN and P-JANGO did not elect any deputy.
