Africa-Press – Angola. The spokesman for the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Lucas Quilundo, said Tuesday that the institution is committed to strengthening citizens’ confidence in electoral institutions.
The official advanced the fact to the press, in Lisbon, after the colloquium on “Electoral enlightenment and new techniques and technologies-reflection on “Fake news” and Artificial Intelligence in elections”.
The colloquium was held by the ROJAE-CPLP Network of Jurisdictional Bodies and Electoral Administration.
According to Lucas Quilundo, the CNE imposes that citizens must be informed about the elections, so that they can exercise their right to vote naturally when exercising.
In turn, the President of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, highlighted the holding of the meeting in the current year, fundamentally, because Portugal will not have national elections in the next four years.
This year, he said, there will be elections for the Legislative Assembly of the autonomous region of Madeira, which will follow in 2024, 2025 and 2026, successively elections for the European Parliament, elections for local authorities, for President of the Republic and for the Assembly of the Republic.
For you, this is a good year for the Portuguese to prepare for this new national electoral cycle.
He considered the issue of disinformation, the use of artificial intelligence and its possibilities also in electoral campaigns and in the holding of elections to be “hot”, so it can and should be addressed, both from a doctrinal and a practical point of view .
He argued that it should be treated from a doctrinal point of view, because elections are a component, a necessary, absolutely necessary condition for the existence of a democracy.
During the meeting, topics such as “Media, fake news and Artificial Intelligence tools in electoral processes and freedom of action and equal opportunities for
candidacies”, “Information deserts and other dangers to democracy” were discussed.
The meeting also addressed, among others, the following topics: “A look at elections in the context of disinformation and algorithms created by machines”, “The information environment surrounding elections: challenges and opportunities that present themselves” and “Advantages and dangers of use of Artificial Intelligence tools by public authorities during election periods”.
