Congo: Angolan fishermen meet sentence this Tuesday

Africa-Press – Angola. Five Angolan fishermen detained since the first week of January this year by the maritime authorities of the department (province) of Ponta-Negra will be sentenced this Tuesday.

Accused of violating territorial waters, illegal fishing in restricted areas and security of oil platforms, as well as false personal and navigation documentation, the five Angolan fishermen incur penalties ranging from 1 to 2 years in prison.

Tuesday, which completes the fourth session of judgments, the court will decide the fate of the fishermen.

The Angolan diplomatic representation in Ponta Negra accompanies the hearings, providing moral and logistical support to the detained Angolan fishermen.

In recent years, the maritime authorities of this country have warned shipowners, the Captaincy of the Port of Cabinda and fishermen’s associations to stop Angolan fishermen from violating Congolese waters, under penalty of being criminally charged.
