Africa-Press – Angola. Continental fishing in Huíla, more precisely in the rivers in the municipalities of Matala, Quipungo, Cuvango, Caluquembe, Chicomba and Jamba, fell from four tons/month in 2017 to 800 kilograms, a decline made worse by the lack of financing and the degradation of the means.

Continental fishing activity in the most diverse watercourses in these municipalities needs to be revitalized, so that it can return to high production. In total, 15 associations, bringing together 130 fishermen, are responsible for production.

The degradation of working resources, such as boats, nets and others, is seen as the main cause of the decline, according to the head of the Provincial Department of Fisheries, of the Huíla Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries office, José Maria Candungo.

The official said that as a result of the lack of revitalization, the pace of continental fishing has dropped in these municipalities, where the activity is carried out, because associations find it difficult to access financing and many of the operators no longer have nets, wires, hooks, nor canoes.

He stressed that although there are some municipalities that, as part of the fight against poverty, are purchasing fishing kits, they are still insufficient to relaunch a sustainable activity in these communities.

He called on banks to be “flexible”, with the creation of attractive packages for the sector, minimizing bureaucracy, so that fishermen can find new ways to boost their activity, as until the moment credit requests in the sector are made to banks, there are more than five years, none have been satisfied.

The province of Huíla is rich in hydrological resources, which is why continental fishing is carried out mainly in the rivers Cunene, Caimoni, Quiteve (Matala), Losseque (Chicomba), Cubango (Cuvango), Sacalesso, Calepi and Huilo (Caluquembe), lake do sendi and the Chicungo river (Quipungo), as well as in the Cului (Jamba) hydrographic basin.
