The family doctor is the health professional who is in contact with the family and the community, being the specialist in primary health care who attends to children, young people, adults and the elderly, explained the director of the Pediatric Hospital of Luanda, Francisco Domingos. .
The pediatrician stressed that the family doctor is a health professional specializing in general practice, and can act in primary health care, also assisting patients in different age groups, including even pediatric patients.
Francisco Domingos said that, in the country, fundamentally at the level of pediatrics, there are not enough pediatricians to solve children’s problems, so in view of this reality, he justified that the family doctor usually also attends to children and women during the management period. .
The pediatrician explained that the family doctor works in primary level situations, having a vital role in preventive matters, and can be framed in various contexts in Luanda and in other provinces of the country.
The director of the Pediatric Hospital of Luanda considered that it was necessary to train more family doctors, as they are the professionals who are ready to deal with diseases that may arise in a community.
Francisco Domingos stressed that the country currently has more than 100 family doctors, most of whom are concentrated in Luanda.
On the date, the head of the Pediatric Hospital David Bernardino considered that it serves to raise awareness and alert about the role of family doctors in Angolan society and beyond.
Area Of Activity
Regarding the area of action, the family doctor can act in different scenarios, both in the public and private sectors, in the outpatient care of hospitals, in the management of health services and in teaching and research.
“The family doctor provides individualized care for people with the most diverse backgrounds”, highlighted Francisco Domingos for whom the construction of this care relationship is important so that the professional knows, in addition to the health history, the understanding of life, fears , anxieties, desires and plans of their patients.
“This is important information so that, in a shared way, we can seek an improvement in quality of life, health maintenance, disease care”, highlighted the pediatrician.
Presence In 17 Provinces
Josemar de Lima, secretary general of the College of Specialty of General and Family Medicine, which has been in existence for four years, has been providing the necessary technical advice to the Ministry of Health for the implementation of a specialized training program that allows the training of doctors of highly competent family members capable of effectively solving more than 80 percent of community health problems.
The doctor stressed that the College also works on disease prevention and rehabilitation of the disabled and encourages scientific research in the classroom.
The organization works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MINSA), as the sector head’s commitment is the multiplication of family doctors throughout the national territory.
As part of the project, Josemar de Lima informed that a group of 513 family doctors in 17 provinces are being trained in institutions directly supervised by MINSA.
In this endeavor, the College has been offering the necessary scientific support, so that specialists can emerge from these hospitals to respond to the challenges facing the country.
But, he added that, currently, the country has 83 national family doctors and 186 expatriates, who have helped in the process of training professionals. In the next few days, 14 more of these technicians will finish graduation and enter their duties.
International Forum
Josemar de Lima announced that, today, the 1st International Forum of General Medicine and Family Medicine is scheduled to take place at the Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento Hospital Complex, where representatives from Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique and Cuba will exchange experiences.
