Africa-Press – Angola. Thirty peasant women in the municipality of Dirico, province of Cuando Cubango, promoted on Saturday, in the municipality of Diríco, the first edition of the Onion Fair which aimed to show the great potential that the district has for the large-scale cultivation of this crop. The fair took place under the motto “Empowered Women Diversify the Local Economy”, in the municipal headquarters of Dirico, 600 kilometers from the city of Menongue. This event was part of the local program to combat hunger and poverty in the communities.
The city administrator, Ruth Tenente, praised the initiative of the aforementioned peasant women and said that the fair exceeded expectations, considering the quantity of onions sold.
Ruth Tenente stressed that the fair aimed to draw attention to the fact that Dirico produces a lot of onions, the main market for which has been Namibia, where farmers take large quantities for sale.
“We want to sell our image that in Dirico, women farmers and others produce a lot of onions, since we should not hide the excellent work that is being done by farmers with great sacrifice and that they need more support to promote production”, he said.
He encouraged local producers to continue working to increase agricultural production, as the area has favorable conditions in terms of arable land and water resources for this purpose.
The challenge was that next year, the jurisdiction would host the Potato Fair, called “Tupangueni”, that is, in the translation of Ngangela.
