Africa-Press – Angola. The head of the provincial department for Culture, Historical Heritage and Traditional Communities in Cunene, Ana Maria, highlighted, this Thursday, the creation of the museum nucleus, for the preservation, conservation and enhancement of the local cultural heritage.

In a statement, regarding the 18th of May (World Museums Day), he said that the installation of a museological nucleus in the Casa da Cultura is underway, with the purpose of guaranteeing the preservation of the collection that represents the socio-cultural mosaic of the groups. local ethno-linguistics.

He clarified that the nucleus will operate in the building of the Casa da Cultura and constitutes an “added value”, in that it guarantees the preservation of the collection of the socio-cultural mosaic of the local ethno-linguistic groups.

He recalled that the province has never had a single museum, which hinders the preservation of cultural heritage and makes research and conservation of the cultural identity of the people of the region unfeasible.

He made it known that, together with a partner (businessman), the collection and acquisition of museum pieces from the various peoples of this region is underway.

On this path, he said that several artefacts have already been installed, such as omalilo, delela, ondjeva, elilo, oshimi and mufi, utensils used by Kwanhama communities, and which are historical and cultural heritage to be preserved.

He highlighted that the office is working with the authorities of traditional power and local communities, in order to help in the collection of artefacts and handcrafted pieces for the museum room.

The official highlighted the importance of preserving the habits, customs and cultural identity of Cunene, as it is a heritage left by ancestors and, consequently, the transmission of cultural testimony to new generations.

“It is through museums that new generations learn about the culture of the region, the struggles of the past, tribes and ethnicities of a given nation”, he underlined.

“There are many people who do not know the reality of local habits and customs and this infrastructure will allow information on gastronomy, clothing, among others”, he underlined.

The museum is a cultural institution whose mission is to carry out research, conserve, promote and disseminate the collective memory of a given society using its collection and to develop other activities of education and cultural mediation.

It constitutes a means of socialization, playing a decisive role in the construction/reconstruction of the cultural identity of a people.

International Museum Day was created in 1977, through the initiative of the International Council of Museums, a body that integrates the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),

The aim is to draw the attention of society and the public to the importance of museums in preserving the history and culture of humanity.
