Africa-Press – Angola. Five chess players from the René Castilho school represent the province of Cunene in the National Youth Championship, in the under 14, 16 and 18 categories, taking place from this Friday until the tenth, in Namibe.

These are Renelsa António, Rosalina Mutumbulwa, Muadikange Rosalina, Eduardo Arquimedes and Eduardo Agnaldo, informed Wednesday, the president of the Cunene Provincial Chess Association (APXC), Apolinário António.

Speaking upon departure to the race site, Apolinário António said that the objective is to compete to value the work that has been done towards the growth of the sport internally.

She recognized that women’s chess is a brand in Cunene, occupying the second position nationally, which is why they expect to compete at the same level as opponents from other regions of the country.

He made it known that the sport in the province lacks financial support to guarantee the athletes’ accommodation and transportation, highlighting that currently the association has done everything to maintain the tradition of the sport.

“We have enough human resources and we are making great progress and with satisfaction, the biggest difficulty is the lack of support and sponsorship”, he highlighted.

Chess Achievements in Cunene:

Athlete Renelsa António is one of the most outstanding in the province, she won the National Junior Women’s Championship, held in September 2022, in Namibe.

She was also national champion in Under-12 (2017), Under-14 (2018 and 2019), national champion in Under-16 and third place in the African Youth Championship (2020).

Her sporting CV also includes the title of national runner-up (2021), participation in the World Championship in Greece (2018) and the Indian Olympics (2022), where she played six games, obtaining two wins, two draws and two defeats.

The Cunene Provincial Chess Association controls more than 70 chess players.
