Deputies question legality of demolitions in Zango

Africa-Press – Angola. The municipal administrator of Viana, Demétrio de Sepúlveda, Thursday assured UNITA deputies that the demolitions of residences, which took place on February 27th, in the urban district of Zango, in Luanda, are legal.

The official made this statement during a meeting with members of the UNITA parliamentary group.

Demétrio de Sepúlveda informed that the site in question is an area attached to the Gamek project, intended for the construction of an electrical substation that will supply the new Luanda Airport and part of Zango.

The administrator explained that at the beginning of the construction of the substation, there was only one house in that space and that the owners of the other houses were notified not to build in this area.

“We are not going to allow construction or occupation of spaces previously intended for any public or private good,” he said.

He made it known that 11 houses that already housed families were demolished and the rest were just works.

On her turn, the vice-president of UNITA’s parliamentary group, Navita Ngolo, said that the purpose of the meeting was to remember that the National Assembly approved a resolution 37/09 that obliges State institutions or any authority before proceeding with the demolition or expropriation of any citizen’s land, seek to resettle those affected.

After the meeting, the deputies went to the place to talk to the families who had recently seen their homes demolished.

They comprise the municipality of Viana, the urban districts of Zango, Baia, Vila Flor, Kikuxi, Vila/sede, Estalagem and the commune of Calumbo…
