Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the Group of Women Parliamentarians of the National Assembly, Teresa José Adelina da Silva Neto, said, Monday (31), in Luanda, at the opening of the Workshop on the Prevention of Combating Breast Cancer, that the significant increase in cases diagnosed in the first half of this year is worrying.
Teresa da Silva Neto spoke at the opening of the event and pointed out 178 cases, corresponding to 25.7 percent of diagnosed cancers, with a fatality rate of approximately 123 cases, which she considered even more terrifying, when it is known that the cause of the high number of deaths in the country is related to the late arrival at the diagnosis and treatment centers and the lack of periodic mammography exams and other similar screenings.
He defended that public and private entities should be encouraged to participate in prevention campaigns, in order to raise citizen awareness of solidarity and, above all, charity that, in the extreme, symbolizes love for others and fraternity among children of the same land.
According to the deputy, data published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, as part of the World Health Organization (WHO), show that cancer is responsible for one in six deaths worldwide.
“Cancer has become, among all other pathologies, the biggest nightmare in all societies on this huge planet. Breast cancer is considered the leading cause of death among women, representing the fifth most common cause of death”, informed.
He made it known that prevention has become one of the most significant public health challenges of the 21st century, alarmed by records that point to more than 2.26 million new cases and almost 685,000 deaths worldwide, which the authorities look to for it as the most suitable and capable form of mitigation.
Thus, according to data from the Agency, in 2021, the Republic of Angola diagnosed 295 new cases of breast cancer, corresponding to 25.3 percent of all registered cancers. The numbers of deaths from this pathology reached the figure of 131 deaths per year.
Gelson Santos, administrator of the National Petroleum, Gas and Fuel Agency, said that he has been carrying out social responsibility actions with attention to initiatives, both those of the Angolan Executive and those of civil society organizations, in favor of Education, Health and of the Environment.
He informed that non-governmental organizations benefit from the support of the sector, within the framework of social responsibility investments.
