Diamond Mining and Fuel Smuggling Attracts Migrants from DRC

Africa-Press – Angola. The provincial commander of Police in Lunda-Norte province, Gerson Miguel, said on Wednesday that diamond mining and fuel smuggling continue to attract illegal immigrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to this Angolan province.

Speaking to the press, at the end of the visit of the governor of Lunda-Norte, Filomena Miza, to the border of Chissanda, she stressed that immigrants, with the help of some Angolans, who pretend to be family members, when they enter the country illegally, settle in mining areas for diamond mining.

He added that some, with the help of Angolans, get fuel at gas stations and promote smuggling at the border, situations that force the defense and security agencies to trigger redoubled inspection actions to combat the phenomena.

Immigrants settle in areas of illicit diamond exploitation and for the practice of fuel smuggling.

He informed that a large part of illegal immigrants are also dedicated to the crimes of vandalization of public property, armed robberies, among other crimes.

The commander denounced that the National Police has recorded deaths of motorcyclists, murdered by illegal immigrants who end up taking the motorcycles and taking them to the DRC, using ‘fiotes’ paths.

On the other hand, he reiterated that about 300 DRC citizens are repatriated weekly to their country of origin, for illegal entry and stay in the national territory.

‘Unfortunately, our effort has not been the same as that of the Congolese authorities, because the reception of immigrants by the Directorate of Migration and Foreigners of the DRC is not the most usual and responsible, that is, they receive it, after a few hours they release it and they violate it again at our borders,’ he lamented.

The border between Angola and the DRC, in Lunda-Norte, is more than 700 kilometers long.
