Africa-Press – Angola. The director of the Provincial Office of Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland in Cuando Cubango, Francisco Manjolo, defended Thursday, the need for greater dissemination of the Martyrs of Colonial Repression, so that new generations know the real meaning for the Angolan people.
The person responsible, who was reacting on the Colonial Martyrs’ Day, specifically in Baixa de Cassange in 1961, by the Portuguese regime, said that it is necessary that, on the events that marked the patriotism of Angolans, the new generations can be encouraged and informed, in the sense to be aware of and value their martyrs.
For the director, new and future generations need to know the events that marked the spirit of firmness and selflessness of the Angolan people in the fight against the then Portuguese colonial regime, aiming to keep this history alive, at a time when little is said about such achievements. in favor of the Angolan homeland.
He recalled that the peasant revolt in Baixa de Cassange gave rise to the beginning of the National Liberation Struggle, towards the achievement of National Independence, proclaimed on November 11, 1975, which is why it should deserve recognition and greater dissemination in diverse debates.
The 4th of January 1961 represents a historic milestone that affected more than ten thousand peasants from the former Angola Cotton Company (Cotonang), in Baixa de Cassanje, who were savagely murdered by the Portuguese colonialists, demanding workers’ rights, abolition from forced labor, exemption from paying taxes and other mistreatment to which they were subjected by the colonial yoke.
