EITI sees steps taken by Angola in the management of mineral resources

Africa-Press – Angola. A delegation from the international secretariat of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) has been in Luanda since Tuesday, to record the steps taken regarding the commitments assumed by Angola and provide technical support to the national secretariat.

One of the commitments that Angola assumed when it was admitted, on June 16, 2022, by the organization, is to continue to improve the processes of supervision of the transparent management of our mineral resources for the benefit of the people.

The delegation, which is headed by EITI Director of Dissemination and Engagement, Lyydia Kilipi, will stay in Angola until February 18th, according to a note released by the National Coordination Committee (CNC) of this initiative.

According to the document, information will be shared with the international secretariat on the status of implementation of EITI Angola.

Also included in the agenda for this visit is a workshop on “Natural Resources and Illicit Financial Flows”, a meeting that plans to bring together 15 members of the EITI CNC, including those from the Ministries of Finance, Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, National Agency for Oil and Gas (ANPG), Sonangol, Azuly, Equinor and Sodiam.

Also taking part in the meeting are members of the EITI CNC, representatives of civil society, the Association of Disadvantaged Children in Angola (ACDA), Angolan ADRA, Youth Association for Community Development of Angola (AJUDECA), Ecological Youth of Angola (JEA) and Mwana Pwó.

A working meeting is also planned with representatives of the Association of Petroleum Exploration Companies of Angola (ACEPA) and the mining sector, as well as the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo, in his capacity as president of the CNC .

Joint meeting with the Embassy of Norway and development partners are also planned.

This is the first working visit by the EITI international secretariat, since the EITI Council approved Angola’s candidacy for membership in this initiative, becoming the 57th member country and the 28th in Africa.

The acceptance was made possible by the initiative of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

The EITI’s purpose is to allow for the proper and monitorable use of these revenues so that they can contribute to the stability of the economy and politics of countries with extractive industries, such as oil and mining, and thereby strengthen the fight against corruption.

Thus, the CNC seeks to expressly assume the political will to strengthen the national instruments of good governance, which include accountability to citizens so that they have access to information related to the revenues that come from the extractive industry in Angola.
