Africa-Press – Angola. An electrical discharge killed nineteen head of cattle in the Mustive Tchissamba neighborhood, on the outskirts of the municipal headquarters of Ganda, Benguela province, local authorities reported this Monday.
The animals, victims of this electrical discharge, which hit the neighborhood at around 6pm last Saturday, the 28th, were returning from pasture, in what is considered an unusual case in the municipality of Ganda and which continues to attract many curious people to the place.
Press found that another 24 heads of cattle that were part of the same herd survived.
According to one of the breeders, who requested anonymity, this is the first time that a phenomenon like this has happened in Ganda and the death of cattle on pasture is worrying the community.
The municipal administrator of Ganda, Francisco Prata, regrets the death of such a large number of cattle, which guaranteed the sustainability of the affected families.
Urging residents to remain calm, the administrator warns that electrical discharges in the region are common in rainy weather and generally kill people, not animals.
Just last year, for example, it was remembered that six people in the town of Casseque were burned to death when the house where they were staying was hit by an electrical discharge.
In turn, the spokesperson for the Provincial Civil Protection and Fire Command, Jorge David, confirmed the death of the 19 heads of cattle after being struck by lightning.
He urged livestock farmers to take preventive measures, keeping animals away from trees and other places likely to be affected by electrical discharges.
Lightning rod
The director of the Provincial Office of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Gomes da Silva, argues that, to avoid damage like this, it is necessary to install lightning rods in the municipality of Ganda.
“These are income from small livestock farmers who are left without their heads due to this phenomenon”, he stressed.
In fact, he said it was necessary to engage other State institutions to see the installation of lightning rods, aiming to protect both people and animals.
