Africa-Press – Angola. The employed population increased by 1.9%, in the fourth quarter of 2022, in Angola, compared to the third quarter of the same year.

The employment rate rose by 0.6 percentage points (pp), compared to the third quarter.

According to the Quick Information Sheet (FIR) of the Employment Survey in Angola (IEA), published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), by gender, the male employment rate decreased by 2.6 and the female rate rose by 3.5 pp, compared to the third quarter of 2022.

In the same period, according to the document accessed by press, the employment rate of young people aged 15-24 (39.6%) was 5.1% higher than in the third quarter of the year in question.

In the main sectors of economic activity, around 50.0% of the employed population declared that they are in agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade, with 21.7%.

Of the employed population, the data indicate that most work in the private sector, noting that the family worker, without remuneration, increased by 2.3 pp, compared to the third quarter of 2022.

If compared with the same period of the previous year, the employed population increased by 7.3%, with the employment rate of young people, aged 15-24, increasing by 4.9 pp in relation to the same quarter of the previous year.

In the same period, the population working in production for own consumption increased by 4.2 percentage points.

The IEA sample indicates that most employed people are in informal employment, 80.5%, of which 72.3% are men and 87.9% are women.

In that percentage, 50.5% are self-employed (50.3%), 29.5% family workers and 10.7% work for their own consumption.

Looking at ages, the employed population aged 15 and over was estimated at 11.6 million, of which 5.5 million were male and 6 million were female.

The employment rate was estimated at 63.1%, being significantly higher in the rural area than in the urban area (79.7% and 54.4%), respectively, similar to the evolution that occurred in almost every quarter, resulting in a difference of 25 ,2 pp.

Unemployment still high

Unlike the figures for the employed population, the survey shows that the unemployed, aged 15 or over, is estimated at 4.9 million, of which 2.42 million are men and 2.49 are women.

These numbers took the unemployment of the population, aged 15 or over, to 29.6%, being the highest for men with 30.4%, and slightly reduced for women in the order of 28.9%.

But compared to the third quarter of 2022, the unemployed population aged 15 or over increased by 0.2% in the fourth quarter.

The unemployment rate of the population aged 15 or over decreased by 0.4 percentage points.

Compared to the same period, 2021, the unemployed population decreased by 8.0%, compared to the same quarter of the same year and the unemployment rate decreased by 3.3 percentage points, which corresponds to a variation of minus 10.0%.

The IEA is a sample survey, aimed at the population residing in family homes in Angola.

Per quarter, a total of 10,944 households are selected, 6,036 in the urban area and 4,908 in the rural area.

Data collection in 18 provinces had a field team for each province, with the exception of Luanda, which had two, including team supervisors, surveyors, cartographers, who covered the selected households, according to the sample.

The IEA is a sample survey, aimed at the population living in family homes in Angola. The data were weighted, taking as reference the estimates of the resident population in Angola, calculated from the final results of the 2014 General Population and Housing Census (RGPH) and the Population Projection for the period 2014-2050.
