Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Executive starts on the 16th of this month, the final phase of the process of re-registration and proof of life of former combatants and veterans of the motherland, aiming to improve social assistance to this fringe of society.
The aforementioned process began in 2019, and is expected to resume this month in Cabinda province, and once completed, it will present reliable figures that will provide greater and better social assistance also for the war disabled and the relatives of former combatants.
The information was given Wednesday, in the municipality of Quela, by the Secretary of State for Former Combatants and Veterans of the Homeland, Domingos André “Chicanha”, when he presided over the central act of the 62nd anniversary of the Martyrs of the Colonial Repression, that the town welcomed.
The official did not provide details about this process, but only mentioned that its success depends on the involvement and patriotic spirit of all in the tasks aimed at dignifying those who fought for the achievements of the country initiated with the repression of January 4, 1961.
On the other hand, the Secretary of State said that the Executive is carrying out a program to revitalize the national economy that aims to give greater social dignity to the population, which it greatly deserves, with emphasis on former combatants and veterans of the country.
“The dignification of former combatants is not an exclusive task of the Ministry of Defense, but of society as a whole, that is why we are all going to embark on this endeavor that aims to honor the heroes of national liberation”, he appealed, stressing that it is imbued with this spirit that the government has been working to improve the living conditions of Angolans.
Regarding the event, he considered the 4th of January as one of the most emblematic dates of the revolutionary process of the Angolan people against the Portuguese colonialists, as it gave rise to other demonstrations that later culminated in the country’s independence on 11 November 1975.
However, he guaranteed to bring the concern to the sovereign bodies, to resume the 4th of January as a national holiday, presented by children of Baixa de Cassanje, as he considered it fair and as a tribute to the heroes who fell during the massacre of the martyrs of colonial repression.
Another concern has to do with the construction of a memorial in the locality of Teka-dia-Kinda, where many heroes of the 4th of January lie, whose project, according to him, is already drawn up, lacking the consultation of the government of the province of Malanje and the authorities traditions, in the sense of finding consensus on the same.
On the occasion, the provincial governor of Malanje, Marcos Nhunga highlighted the appreciation and homage that is annually paid to the precursors of the 4th of January, as an act of recognition of the paths opened with this battle against the colonialists, which must be perpetuated in the memories of Angolans. .
In addition to exalting the fallen figures, he said it was a way of increasingly disseminating the history of the massacre in Baixa de Cassanje, with new and future generations, whose efforts and heroism demonstrated, should be adopted as examples to develop Angola and create conditions for the well-being of the population.
In turn, the secretary general of the Federation of Former Combatants and Veterans of the Homeland, Geraldo Júnior, reiterated the challenge of the association to the Executive to build a monument in honor of the massacre in Baixa de Cassanje, living up to the proposal of the Ministry of Defense, which aims to recover and preserve memories of national liberation struggles and the achievement of peace in Angola.
The central act took place under the motto “January 4, 1961 to January 4, 2023-Honor the Brave Combatants of the Anti-Colonial Struggle” and culminated with the laying of a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier, in the Teka cemetery. -day-Kinda, where heroes of the Baixa de Cassanje massacre lie, followed by the delivery of bicycles and used clothing balloons to youth and traditional authorities.
