Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan biomedical scientist Amadeu Abrantes advocated Friday in Soyo, Zaire province, for the strengthening of rigorous laboratory screening for blood transfusions to prevent the transmission of diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, malaria, and syphilis.
Speaking at the regional meeting on blood transfusions, organized by the National Blood Institute (INS), Amadeu Abrantes warned that Angola has more than 300,000 people with HIV, three million with hepatitis B, and an incidence of gestational syphilis of 34 cases per thousand births.
The meeting, which brought together blood transfusion professionals from Zaire, Bengo, and Uíge over two days, addressed, among other topics, best practices in blood collection, technical training, and clinical diagnosis in blood transfusions.
The meeting was held in partnership with OMR, a company specializing in the marketing of laboratory equipment and medical consumables. The event brought together 45 technicians.
