Africa-Press – Angola. The African Basketball Confederation (FIBA Africa) confirmed, this Friday, the Republic of Angola as the venue for the 31st African Senior Men’s Championship “Afrobasket” in 2025, after the 1989, 1999 and 2007 editions.
The country of African champions, whose candidacy had organizational capacity and infrastructure as one of its strengths, surpassed competition from Morocco and Egypt.
Angola has accumulated experience in organizing international sporting competitions and has modern multi-purpose pavilions in the provinces of Luanda, Huíla, Benguela, Malanje, Cabinda and Namibe.
In an interview with the president of the Angolan Federation of the sport, published, on the 28th of February, Moniz Silva was confident that Angola would be nominated by the governing body for basketball in Africa.
On the occasion, the sports director announced the arrival of the president of FIBA AFRICA to the country, the Mozambican Aníbal Manave, this March, to sign the contract for the competition between Angola and the continental institution.
The motto of the candidacy, in addition to the redemption of the continental title, also fits into the festivities of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, to be celebrated on November 11th, according to the source.
This is the fourth time that Angola will host an edition of the men’s senior Afrobasket, 35 years after the first experience (1989).
In 2007, in the third test, the test took place in more than one city in addition to Luanda, Cabinda, Benguela, Huambo and Huíla.
The National Senior Men’s Basketball Team has eleven continental titles, the first being won in 1989, in Luanda, with coach Victorino Cunha, and the last in 2013, in Côte d’Ivoire, under the guidance of coach Paulo Macedo.
