Africa-Press – Angola. The General Debate of the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) on the actions of parliaments for peace, justice and strong institutions continues this Wednesday, in Luanda, with the intervention of representatives from several international delegations.
The program has also reserved for this Wednesday the meeting of the standing committee for sustainable development, as well as the second World Parliamentary Summit on the Fight against Terrorism and the Prevention of Violent Extremism.
The meeting’s spokesperson, Idalina Valente, said that, throughout the debate at the IU Assembly, participants’ speeches focused on consolidating peace and the need to reform justice so that it is more inclusive.
“Peace is essential for the development and well-being of any country and any person”, highlighted deputy Idalina Valente.
Idalina Valente added that the general debate presented an innovation on indicators for evaluating the functioning of parliaments in relation to the effectiveness and efficiency of addressing citizens’ problems.
On Tuesday, participants voted on the urgent items, that is, in every IU Assembly an urgent topic is adopted for discussion, which then results in the drafting of a resolution that must be approved on the last day by the Board of Directors.
According to Idalina Valente, of the four proposals presented, two were withdrawn, namely that of Malaysia and another unspecified parliamentary delegation.
The two proposals that remained one were signed by Algeria and the other by several countries, including South Africa, which defended the immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
Idalina Valente reported that neither of the two points was adopted as they did not receive votes equal to or greater than 2/3.
The organization’s rule establishes that, for an urgent proposal to be adopted, it must gather a number of votes equal to or greater than 2/3.
“We were left without a point of urgency due to lack of consensus, despite the proposal to end the war in the Gaza Strip having more positive votes, but it still failed to gather 2/3”, explained Idalina Valente.
The election of the new president of the UIP will take place on the last day of the meeting (Friday the 27th).
Four women from parliaments in Africa are running for office for a three-year term.
These are Adji Diarra Mergane Kanouté, from Senegal, Catherine Gotani Hara, from Malawi, Tulia Ackson, from Tanzania, and Marwa Abdibashir Hagi, from Somalia.
