Government of Moxico highlights spiritual dimension of Dom Mata Mourisca

Africa-Press – Angola. The Government of the Province of Moxico highlighted, this Friday, the spiritual dimension of the bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Uíge, Dom Francisco da Mata Mourisca, who died on Thursday, a victim of illness, at the age of 94.

In a message of condolences, the Government of Moxico considers Dom Mata Mourisca as a pastor who dedicated his whole life to the noblest causes and to ecclesiastical service.

“A servant of God leaves behind a legacy of patriotism, abnegation and service, so we bow before his memory (…) and he will be remembered for his memorable deeds”, highlights the note.

The Catholic prelate died at Hospital D. Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento, in Luanda.

With the civil name José Moreira dos Santos, D. Francisco da Mata Mourisca was born on October 12, 1928, in the then parish of Mata Mourisca, from which he takes his name, Diocese of Coimbra, Portugal.

He was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Uíge, then Diocese of Carmona and S. Salvador, on March 14, 1967, aged 39, and ordained on April 30 of the same year, in Porto, Portugal.

He belonged to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and was ordained a priest in Porto, on January 20, 1952.

Graduated in Dogmatic Theology from the University of Salamanca, Spain, in 1957, D. Francisco da Mata Mourisca held various positions of responsibility in Portugal, including that of provincial minister of the Capuchins.
