Africa-Press – Angola. President João Lourenço highlighted on Wednesday, the experience and capacity for contribution of Adão de Almeida, who took office as a new member of the Council of the Republic, after being appointed as the Speaker of the National Assembly.
Adão de Almeida, who recently assumed the position of Speaker of the National Assembly, replaces Carolina Cerqueira in the advisory body to the Head of State.
João Lourenço emphasized the new advisor’s career over several years of public service and recalled that his entry into the Council stems from a new institutional status.
“After having performed different functions in the Executive for many years, today he enters this Noble Hall in a new capacity, that of Speaker of the National Assembly, therefore, of another sovereign body, and consequently, as a new member of the Council of the Republic, by virtue of the function he has been exercising for about 48 hours,” said João Lourenço.
The Head of State said he hopes that Adão de Almeida will contribute “with his knowledge and vast experience” to the political advisory process that the members of the Council provide to the President of the Republic.
“I wish you well in your role as President of the National Assembly. This is the opportunity I have to congratulate you on taking on this new responsibility and also on joining the Council of the Republic,” noted João Lourenço.
The Council of the Republic is the advisory body to the President of the Republic, as provided for in the Angolan Constitution, and plays a central role in political advice at the highest level of the State.
According to the law, its main powers include advising the Head of State whenever requested, issuing opinions on declarations of war or peace, opinions on states of exception, such as the state of siege and state of emergency, as well as reviewing its own internal regulations.
The composition of the Council of the Republic is also defined by the Constitution. The body is chaired by the Head of State and includes the Vice-President of the Republic, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Attorney General, as well as leaders of political parties with parliamentary seats.
The President of the Republic may also invite other personalities to participate in the sessions when deemed appropriate.
Although the Council’s recommendations are not binding, the body assumes great political relevance in strategic decisions.
In various meetings, it has analyzed topics of national interest, including food security, public safety, and other critical issues.
