Africa-Press – Angola. João Lourenço inaugurated on Monday (01) in the Province of Cabinda the first phase of the Cabinda Oil Refinery, which marks the start of operations of the largest crude oil processing unit built in Angola since National Independence in 1975.

The ceremony marked the completion of Phase I of the project, designed to produce diesel, jet fuel (Jet A1), heavy fuel oil, and naphtha, with a processing capacity of 30,000 barrels daily.

The facility’s operations kick off is considered a symbol of energy sovereignty and value creation for the country’s future generations.

According to the technical schedule, commercial launch will be preceded by a testing period of approximately three months.

The project is the result of a public-private partnership between Gemcorp Holdings (90%) and Sonangol (10%), under the supervision of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas (MIREMPET).

The investment in the first phase was valued at US$473 million, with financing secured by an international consortium of banks, including the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Afreximbank, BADEA, IDC, and BFA.

The infrastructure incorporates cutting-edge technology and is the first refinery in Africa to operate with a “zero flaring” system (without routine gas flaring) and it mobilized services and equipment from more than 15 countries and directly involved 200 Angolan companies.
