Africa-Press – Angola. The Head of State, João Lourenço, on Thursday in Luanda paid tribute to Lieutenant General José João “Mawa”, who died of illness on the 24th in the capital of the country.

At the Army Headquarters, the Head of State, accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenço, laid a wreath next to the coffin, expressed his condolences to the family and signed the book of condolences.

In the book, João Lourenço praised the late leader as “a man of arms who served the Angolan people with courage and determination in the most diverse circumstances.

“At a very young age, he joined the anti-colonial struggle, preparing himself for the arduous missions he would later have to carry out in the context of the independent country,” Lourenço said.

The Head of State acknowledged the fact that for decades the late general had contributed to the strengthening and continuous improvement of the protection and defense services of the highest personalities of the State.

“Recognizing the great service of the General Officer who now leaves us, on my own behalf and on behalf of my family, I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and to all the companions of his exemplary journey for Angola,” reads the message of the President of the Republic in the book of condolences.

The Vice President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, government officials, FAA general officers, friends and family also paid tribute to the general, buried Thursday at the Benfica Cemetery.

Lieutenant General José João “Mawa” was a prominent figure in the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), distinguished for his courage and dedication to the service of the country.

His military career began in October 1974 when, as a young man, he left theology school to join the guerrillas of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) in the anti-colonial struggle.

After the country’s independence, “Mawa” played a crucial role in national defense and security, contributing significantly to the strengthening of the protection services of the highest figures in the state.
