Africa-Press – Angola. The Head of State, João Lourenço, on Wednesday in Luanda highlighted the contribution of former Angolan president of the republic José Eduardo dos Santos towards the consolidation of peace and national reconciliation, emphasizing his decisive role in the transition to a stable and united country.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th Decorations Ceremony, within the framework of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence, he stated that the act of awarding the medal of honor within the framework of the 50th anniversary of National Independence symbolizes “a gesture of recognition and gratitude” that over five decades, has developed towards the independence, peace and development of Angola.

President João Lourenço also said that, in the Independence Category for the signatories of the Alvor Agreement, the decoration made possible the implementation of the end of Portuguese colonial rule and paved the way for the proclamation of national independence.

Among the distinguished individuals are António Agostinho Neto from the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Álvaro Holden Roberto of the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), and Jonas Malheiro Savimbi of National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), who are recognized for their decisive contributions to the struggle for liberation and the construction of a sovereign Angolan state.

The Head of State also said that on November 11th, the date commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of National Independence, the Medal of Honor for the 50th Anniversary of National Independence will be awarded to President António Agostinho Neto, founder of the Republic of Angola and deemed Father of the Nation.

According to João Lourenço, this awards ceremony represents “a call for continuous work for national unity and cohesion,” encompassing citizens and institutions from different areas of the country’s political, social, economic, as well as cultural life.
