Africa-Press – Angola. The secretary of the largest opposition party UNITA in central Huila province, Augusto Samuel, said Thursday that the decision by President João Lourenço to award recognition medals to the signatories of the Alvor Agreement, as part of the 50th anniversary of national independence, was “a sign of maturity.”
The politician, who was speaking at the opening of the provincial conference in preparation for UNITA’s 14th Ordinary Congress, said it was a gesture that signaled political maturity and respect for Angola’s history, given the role played by Agostinho Neto, Holden Roberto, and Jonas Savimbi in the national liberation struggle.
For the politician, this presidential decision “represents an important step” towards consolidating national reconciliation and strengthening unity among Angolans.
He considered that regardless of ideological and political differences, it is fair to recognize the contribution of all those who fought for independence and the construction of the homeland.
The politician stressed that the act of honoring national heroes, including the founding leader of the UNITA, demonstrates a gesture of recognition and respect for the founding values of the Angolan nation.
He said that the Huila province is in the midst of preparations for UNITA’s 14th Ordinary Congress to take place on November 28 to 30 in Luanda, under the slogan “United for Change, Stability, and Development.”
Augusto Samuel said that the meeting will also serve to take stock of the activities carried out during the term of office that emerged from the 13th Congress, assess the political, economic, and social situation in the country, and debate the main theses that will be discussed at the national congress.
The politician said that “the moment is crucial,” given that there are less than two years to go before the next general elections, and highlighted the need for greater responsibility on the part of government officials in defining public policies aimed at improving the living conditions of the population.
He encouraged the government to continue with the rehabilitation and expansion of the Lubango Central Hospital and the consolidation of services in the municipal hospitals of Caluquembe and Gambos, considering them important achievements for the improvement of medical care in the province.
Delegates from the province’s 23 municipalities are participating in the preparatory conference of the party with the aim of electing 49 delegates to represent Huila at the national convention, as well as seven permanent candidates and two alternates to the Party’s Political Commission.
