Africa-Press – Angola. The management of the Hospital Complex for Cardiopulmonary Diseases Cardinal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento denied today, Sunday, the information circulated on social networks about the supposed death of the archbishop emeritus of Huambo, Dom Francisco Viti.

The note from the Board of the hospital unit in the country’s capital (Luanda), considers that the information circulated since the last hours of Saturday does not correspond to the truth.

In the same document, the institution informs that, although his condition inspires care, Dom Francisco Viti remains hospitalized and alive.

The 89-year-old Catholic prelate survived, on the 19th of February, a car accident, due to a skid and consequent rollover of the vehicle he was traveling in, on the Chicala-Cholohanga/Huambo section, due to a tire burst from the front, when returning from a pastoral mission in the province of Cuando Cubango.

In the accident, he contracted serious injuries and, due to his clinical condition, was immediately transferred to the Cardiopulmonary Hospital Complex for Cardeal Dom Alexandre do Nascimento, and two days later, he was successfully submitted to a cranial surgical intervention.

Since then, the priest, who is in intensive care, has registered a slight recovery in his clinical condition.

Biographical Summary of Dom Viti

Born in Misasa – Evanga, in the province of Benguela, Dom Francisco Viti was born on August 15, 1933. He received his priestly training at the Minor Seminary of Quipeio, also known as the Minor Seminary of Caála, and at the Major Seminary of Cristo Rei in Huambo , with courses in Philosophy and Theology.

He was ordained a priest on July 14, 1963 at the Cathedral of Huambo.

He was consecrated as bishop on September 28, 1975, in the province of Huambo.

Founder of the Diocese of Menongue, where he worked for 11 years, he was later, in September 1986, appointed Archbishop of Huambo, where he held office for 17 years.

The prelate, who holds the title of the second longest-serving archbishop in the archdiocese of Huambo and the sixth to be consecrated in the new era of the episcopate in Angola, was rector of the Major Seminary of Cristo Rei in Huambo.

Specialized in Philosophy, by the Pontifical Gregorian University, Pastoral Theology, by the Catholic University of Paris, he was already a member of the permanent council of CEAST and of the Angolan delegation in the Episcopal Conference of Catholic Bishops of Southern Africa (IMBISA).

In addition to Portuguese and Umbundu, he is fluent in English, Italian, Latin, Spanish and French.
