Africa-Press – Angola. The launch of volleyball, rugby, shooting and wheelchair tennis, with a focus on including more athletes, will be the main focus of the Huambo Provincial Adapted Sports Association, in the 2024-2028 quadrennium.

Currently, the Association controls 250 athletes, both sexes, in athletics, amputee football, wheelchair basketball, swimming and toilet flushing.

The information was provided, this Tuesday, by the president of the provincial Adapted Sports Association of Huambo, Jaime Chilala, re-elected, in a single list, last weekend, with 98 votes, for another mandate of four years.

He said that the respective modalities are being well accepted in Africa, Europe and America, hence the need for their implementation, to establish necessary international partnerships, with a view to expanding and massifying Angolan adapted sports.

He said that the intention is to implement them, mainly, in children and young people, so that they learn Paralympic sport in the initial phase and, later, move on to the youth, junior and senior categories.

To this end, he informed that centers will be installed throughout the province, to reinforce the partnership with municipal administrations, as they currently exist in only three, namely in Huambo, Longonjo and Londuimbali, in addition to more interaction with the federations of respective modalities.

Jaime Chilala said they are looking for sponsorship to purchase wheelchairs, balls, equipment and other support for the well-being of the athletes, who have shown good performance in the national championships.

He highlighted that the new mandate will be led under the motto “With the well-being of the athletes, we will be defeated”, as the focus will be on health, stability and improving the conditions of the athletes, for the good effort required in provincial and national competitions.

He also pointed out the training of coaches, referees in matters related to sport and Paralympic leadership, as one of the goals to transform this region of the country as the home of adapted sport in the country.

Remember, the province of Huambo is one of the provinces that supplies the most athletes to the national teams, mainly in terms of football for amputees and athletics.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), based on the General Population and Housing Census, carried out in 2014, in the province of Huambo more than 55 thousand people with disabilities who were victims of armed conflict, road accidents and diseases of a diverse nature.
