Huíla: Construction Companies Await Debt Settlement

Africa-Press – Angola. Several construction companies in the province of Huíla, which provided services for the execution of government works, are awaiting payment of 900 million kwanzas issued between 2021 and 2024. According to the president of the Huíla Construction Contractors Association, eleven companies have been able to have their debt collections certified, out of a universe of 40 members, the majority with debts to be certified resulting from services provided to the State in various areas for more than ten years.

“At this moment, of the 40 companies that are part of the Association, if we have ten operating, they open their doors, pay taxes to the State and pay their workers’ salaries, it is with great luck, a situation that worries us greatly”, said the person in charge.Luís Salvaterra said that given the current economic situation in the country, and in the province in particular, where there are few private initiatives to build infrastructure, the government’s public tenders for the construction of schools, hospitals, tertiary roads and others have been an opportunity for micro and small businesses to sustain themselves.

He said that several companies, in order to avoid declaring bankruptcy and recovering their money, had to negotiate with Banco BAI, in which the financial institution pays the entrepreneur the amount of the withdrawal order and retains 13 percent in its favor.
