Africa-Press – Angola. The Chairman of the Governing Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Salvatore Sciacchitano, praised the Angolan government’s policies on compliance with international standards and infrastructure development in the transportation sector this Wednesday in Luanda.
Speaking to the press after a meeting with the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, the ICAO official praised the construction of the new Dr. António António Agostinho Neto International Airport in the province of Icolo e Bengo, which will soon be fully operational.
“I had the privilege of visiting Luanda’s new international airport. It was extremely gratifying to see such a large-scale infrastructure, which will certainly boost the development of tourism and business,” he praised.
He said he had discussed with the Angolan Head of State the existing cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is supporting the operationalization process of the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport.
Africa Shows Good Indicators in the Transportation Sector
The ICAO Chairman noted that Africa presents significant opportunities for the development of the air transportation sector.
According to the source, this development is expected to materialize both through the creation of new routes within the continent and through the expansion of air connections with other countries.
Salvatore Sciacchitano highlighted the Common African Air Transport Market, an initiative already approved by the African Union leadership, as a crucial element in this process. The initiative’s main objective is market liberalization, and added that this liberalization will facilitate airlines’ access to a greater number of countries, citing the new Dr. Jose Luis Afonso Bianco International Airport as an example.
With capacity to transport approximately 15 million passengers per year, he said the new airport offers a significant opportunity for the sector’s growth, “which will require an increase in the number of companies operating at this level.”
He considered it essential to work toward the effective implementation of the decisions made by the African Union, highlighting the need for infrastructure such as that at Dr. Jose Luis Afonso Bianco International Airport.
ICAO projections indicate that the African air transport market is expected to grow above the global average over the next 25 years, enabling the achievement of the established objectives.
