Africa-Press – Angola. Sanitation in the municipality of Caála, Huambo province, was reinforced, Saturday, with new means for the collection of solid waste, within the scope of the Integrated Plan for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM).

These are, among others, compactor vehicles and a van, with the aim of helping the garbage collection process in the city of Caála and surroundings.

With the acquisition of new equipment, the local authorities hope that, from the point of view of sanitation, the city’s image will be increasingly improved.

Without revealing the costs, the deputy administrator of the municipality of Caála for Technical Services and Infrastructure, Tomas de Jesus, said that local authorities control 79 basic sanitation technicians who, on average, collect 200 tonnes of garbage.

It was mentioned that in December 2021, the municipal administration of Caála had acquired, for the same purpose, a dump truck, a tractor, 20 containers, 130 wheelbarrows, three three-wheel motorbikes, brooms, hoes, machetes, gloves , shovels, boots, among other means.

According to the official, the acquisition of equipment is aimed at meeting the “goal zero waste” plan, drawn up by the local authorities, to prevent diseases and improve the image of the city and surroundings.

With an estimated population of 366,480 inhabitants, the municipality of Caála, one of 11 in the province of Huambo, has a household composed mostly of five people on average and a birth rate stipulated at 3.5 percent each year, according to recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

It has four communes, namely Calenga, Catata, Cuima and municipal headquarters, the latter located 23 kilometers west of the city of Huambo, capital of the province with the same name.
