Africa-Press – Angola. Angola will hold its first National Welding Championship next May, with the participation of 20 young students and professionals, the event’s spokesperson, Johnny Pilartes, announced this Tuesday in Luanda.
The test taking place from the 20th to the 22nd of May will be organized by the Ministries of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas and Public Administration, Labor and Social Security (MAPTSS), to present the potential of the specialty, developed in the country by professional centers , technical schools and companies.
During the clarification session held on Tuesday, in Luanda, Pilartes explained that the test will be contested in two categories of 10 candidates each, the first (A) being for technical schools and training centers and competitors aged between 17 and the 22 years.
The second category (B) is reserved for companies, with professionals aged 23 to 25, he indicated, adding that participation will be by invitation.
Johnny Pilartes, who is also deputy general director of the National Petroleum Institute (INP), announced that the winners will participate in the World Championship of Professions (Cenfimskills) and represent Angola in AfricaSkills.
He announced that the top three classified in category A will have a week’s training before representing Angola at Cenfimskills.
In category B, the first place winner will be awarded with internationally recognized training in Portugal.
On the other hand, he recalled that in the first International Welding Workshop, held in 2023, a national brand logo, AngolaSkills, was created, an initiative of the two ministerial institutions involved, in order to promote national professions.
AngolaSkills aims to promote professions that help young people get their first jobs, through workshops, seminars, debates and national professions championships.
“The first to be promoted is industrial welding and, in the coming years, others will also be chosen. However, they are required to be outstanding in terms of the quality of training and certification, both nationally and internationally”, he asserted.
Currently, the National Petroleum Institute is an observer member of the Welding Federation and monitors welding policies at an international level, so that Angola is able to train nationals and be recognized internationally.
He understands that, in terms of welding, for example, the INP has the largest number of cabins, with various processes, 36, with the capacity to train 72 young people at the same time.
For his part, Miguel Venâncio, head of the National Institute of Employment and Professional Training (INEFOP), reiterated that MAPTSS is the Government body whose mission is to respond to employment and professional training policies, hence the added value of the championship. , extremely important, which “basically enhances what the main objective is”.
“We have more than 300 specialties, including welding. The main mission is to promote national talent, at market level, with local labor. The oil sector is one of those that makes the most use of trained labor in the country,” he said.
