IPU debuts new anthem at the opening of the 147th General Assembly

Africa-Press – Angola. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) debuted, this Monday, in Luanda, its new anthem, at the opening of the 147th General Assembly of the multilateral organization.

The Anthem was performed by the Kaposoka Symphony Orchestra (composed of Angolan teenagers from vulnerable families), in the presence of the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço , and hundreds of legislators from around 120 countries.

The Kaposoka Symphony Orchestra was founded on October 10, 2008, by professor Pedro Fançony, while municipal administrator of the current urban district of Samba, in Luanda.

The project emerged as part of the fight against poverty, as well as raising education levels, with the expenses being borne by the Presidency of the Republic.

UIP Anthem

The UIP Anthem was written by Pedro Halfer, a composer who comes from a long line of musicians. Its instrumental composition was chosen by the governing bodies of the UIP among dozens of other applications due to its solemnity and universal appeal: ideal for a global organization like the UIP.

Halfer has written several works that have been performed by orchestras around the world, including the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, the Lille National Orchestra and the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.

Halfer has also taken to the podium to conduct orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and has also worked with Deutsche Grammopthon, Sony and Warner Classics.

However, the outgoing president of the UIP, Duarte Pacheco, emphasized that when he was elected, almost three years ago, he had, among other ambitions, to see the end of the Covid-19 Pandemic, live in a safer, greener, more peaceful and egalitarian “and, perhaps most importantly, find moments that bring us together as a global community.”

“Let us pause and reflect on what unites us and not what divides us. Through the new UIP anthem, we will unite in harmony, instead of fighting for our differences”, stressed Duarte Pacheco.

Duarte Pacheco thanked the Angolan authorities, especially President João Lourenço, the former president of the National Assembly, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, the current president of AN, Carolina Cerqueira, for having worked hard to ensure that the General Assembly of the UIP in Angola were a reality.

The opening ceremony was also marked by speeches by the secretary-general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Martin Chungong, as well as by the special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Parfait Onanga Anyanga.

In his intervention, Martin Chungong, encouraged the creation of strong institutions (parliaments), which must also be representative, for the good of their people.

The special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Parfait Onanga Anyanga, noted that the UN values the support of the IPU to promote the democratic rule of law and reinforce multilateralism and the achievement of the goals of sustainable objectives.

The United Nations special representative praised the efforts that President João Lourenço has made to find paths to effective stability in Africa, recalling the fact that he was elected “Champion for Peace in Africa” by the African Union.
