Africa-Press – Angola. The secretary general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), Martin Chungong, defended this Friday, in Luanda, the need to create strong democratic institutions that can work for the good of the populations.

When speaking to the press, at the end of the meeting with the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, the secretary general of the IPU expressed concern about the multiplicity of violent conflicts that have occurred around the world.

In this regard, he made it known that the General Assembly of the IPU, which begins on Monday, in the Angolan capital, will be able to create a roadmap for promoting peace through dialogue without the use of violent means.

Martin Chungong pointed out that the IPU is concerned about the situation in Northern Mozambique, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the coups that have been taking place in Africa.

He made it known that, as secretary general of the IPU, he has been monitoring this issue, stating that the Luanda Assembly will also serve to advise on how to lead so that crises or conflicts can be eliminated.

“What we will do here in Luanda will be the creation of a roadmap so that we can implement the decisions that will be taken at the event”, he expressed.

According to the parliamentarian, the action plan is consistent with the strategy of the organization, created in 1889, highlighting the need to create strong democratic institutions that can work for the good of the populations.

He informed that the main motto of the IPU General Assembly, “Parliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions”, also aims to achieve sustainable development objectives.

Likewise, he expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Angolan State for, in a short space of time, creating the conditions for holding the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) in Luanda.

As host, the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, will be able to preside over the General Assembly for a week.

During the hearing, the two interlocutors also discussed the climate campaign, the theme of which should be reflected in the document to be approved at the end of the IPU General Assembly.

Carolina Cerqueira talks with her counterpart from Tanzania

Also this Friday, the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, received, in audience, her counterpart from Tanzania, Tulia Ackson, with whom she discussed, among others, aspects linked to inclusivity in the world and the empowerment of youth.

The president of the Parliament of Tanzania, who is one of the candidates for president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), praised Carolina Cerqueira’s work related to female leadership at the level of the legislative body.

She emphasized that this fact demonstrates the Angolan Parliament’s commitment to gender rights and equality, noting that this could inspire other women and girls to enter politics.

It augured that women can work hard to reach decision-making bodies in their respective countries.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), created in 1889, is one of the oldest political organizations in the world and currently has more than 46 thousand deputies from 178 national parliaments, promoting peace and democracy.
