Africa-Press – Angola. The Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee announced this Monday the death of Irene Agostinho Neto, sister of the first President of Angola, António Agostinho Neto, which took place on Sunday in Luanda due to illness.

In the condolences message, the MPLA expresses “deep sadness and high compassion” for the death of Irene Agostinho Neto, aged 97, and expresses “its heartfelt condolences” to the family.

“Sister of the late doctor António Agostinho Neto, the first President of the Republic of Angola, comrade Irene Neto was born in the town of Kaxicane, municipality of Icolo e Bengo, province of Luanda, and had a life guided by the demonstration of recognized conduct of education, integrity morals and ethics, as well as love for the country and the ideals of the Party to which he adhered in his prime,” reads the statement.

According to the MPLA, during the “Armed Struggle for National Liberation”, the role of Irene Agostinho Neto “was notable, among several actions, for the support given to fellow Angolan political prisoners and MPLA militants” residing in Leopoldville, current Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“In this moment of pain and mourning, on behalf of its militants, friends and sympathizers, the Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee bows before the memory of comrade Irene Neto, reiterating the feelings of regret addressed to the family”, concludes the statement. .
