Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, ended his working day in New York, United States of America (USA), this Wednesday, with an intense diplomatic agenda.
The highlight of the last day of his agenda was his speech at the General Debate of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, where he defended, among other aspects, equal treatment in issues related to armed conflicts.
“The international community runs the risk of being accused of giving different treatment, favoring the conflict in Europe to the detriment of others, because they are in the Middle East or Africa”, lamented the Angolan statesman.
According to João Lourenço, the gap between developing and developed countries continues to be an unacceptable reality, hence calling on the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to use fixed contributions for peace support operations mandated by the Union African.
He invited Africa’s international partners to believe and invest in the continental market, because they will have a satisfactory return on their investments in the different sectors.
“We intend to meet the expectations of young Africans who are forced to try to fulfill their dreams outside their continent in contexts of adaptation that are almost always difficult, in addition to the high risk to their lives that many of them face when making dangerous crossings of the Mediterranean”, he criticized .
Also on Wednesday, after speaking at the world’s largest political platform, the Angolan President held a meeting with his Zimbabwean counterpart, Emmerson Mnangagwa, with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and with the Director of Siemmens for Africa, Isabel Cristina Tomás.
Likewise, he promoted and guided the work of a meeting of the troika of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, composed of Angola, Kenya (the country that left the leadership) and Suriname.
The meeting analyzed a set of topics linked to the functioning of the OEACP, a transnational organization whose Secretary General is the Angolan George Chicoti.
When speaking, as acting President of the OEACP, João Lourenço said that the organization, with one and a half billion people, spread across three continents and 79 countries, represents a non-negligible force in the concert of nations, due to the role it can play in helping to build a world of peace and security
He promised to do everything to carry out an active, inclusive and results-oriented presidency, as well as to implement the decisions adopted by previous Summits of Heads of State and Government.
“I therefore want to place special emphasis and appeal for your invaluable support, so that we can face the enormous tasks we are tasked with”, he expressed.
He considered the existence of a spirit of unity, the fulfillment of statutory obligations and the appreciation of each of the bodies to be fundamental, in order to become stronger and capable of responding to the complex challenges facing member countries.
In another sense, the Angolan President said that the world is going through a particularly difficult time, with the proliferation of wars, conflicts between nations, terrorism, unconstitutional changes of power, climate change, endemics
and pandemics which, as a consequence, bring with them a severe food crisis , humanitarian and energy in which the member countries of our organization are the first and main victims.
The most serious thing, he said, is the fact that the international institutions created to deal with these types of situations and provide them with a timely solution have demonstrated that they are powerless and have no solutions that are up to the current challenges.
“This is why the people of the world, of which we constitute the majority, demand profound reforms of global governance, of the United Nations Security Council, to better deal with issues of universal peace and security, and of financial institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization”, he expressed.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the principles and objectives of the OEACP, so that the full fulfillment of its obligations leads to the strengthening of bonds of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the organization and its international partners.
It should be remembered that the President of the Republic of Angola arrived in New York City last Saturday,
after an official mission in Havana, Cuba.
In North American territory, he participated in the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, held within the framework of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, and had several bilateral meetings.
In this area, the meetings with his counterparts from Estonia, Alar Karis, and from the Comoros, from the African Union, Azali Assoumani, with the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Institute for Global Change, Tony Blair, stand out . as well as Scott Nathan – CEO of the US International Finance Corporation (DFC), and Jacob Stausholm, CEO of Rio Tinto.
João Lourenço also met with the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, Samantha Power, who reiterated her country’s enthusiasm for greater involvement, namely through investments in infrastructure to develop the Lobito Corridor.
This investment, he said, can be made through the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment.
Power highlighted President Lourenço’s leadership in diversifying the country’s economy, combating corruption and investing in Angola’s food and water security, as well as discussing opportunities to increase USAID’s involvement.
