Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, left the country, this Friday (10th), bound for Japan, for an official visit at the invitation of the authorities of that Asian nation.

At the “4 de Fevereiro” airport, the Head of State, accompanied by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenço, received farewell greetings from the governor of Luanda, Manuel Homem, members of the Executive and senior officials in his office.

In Japan, in addition to meetings at the highest level in Tokyo, President João Lourenço will take part in a Japan-Angola business forum, on Monday (13).

Part of the program for João Lourenço’s visit to Japan will be carried out in the cities of Nagoya and Kyoto, with activities of a cultural and protocol nature.

Angola and Japan Cooperation

Angola and Japan intend to increase cooperation in the political, economic and cultural domains, especially in the process of industrialization and overcoming challenges in the areas of agriculture and the development of agribusiness, oil and mining.

Bilateral cooperation with Japan began in 1988 as Emergency Aid, via UNICEF.

After the end of the war in 2002, Japan began to carry out assistance in the areas of mine clearance, social reintegration of former soldiers and reintegration of refugees.

As part of the national reconstruction of Angola, Japan has been providing assistance, within the framework of international organizations, in segments such as

food aid, as well as assistance to farmers and poverty.

Japan’s support extends to assistance with the repatriation of refugees, water supply facilities, construction of primary schools, communication network and ports.

In the health sector, since 1996, Japan has donated US$40 million for the rehabilitation and equipment of the Josina Machel Hospital, which is one of the reference hospitals in the country.

Within the scope of economic cooperation, in recent years, knowledge and experiences from Japan have been used in the areas of rice cultivation development and professional training.
