Africa-Press – Angola. President João Lourenço inaugurated this Friday (15) in Saurimo, eastern Province of Lunda-Sul, the Higher Polytechnic Institute of the Lueji A’nkonde University, with a capacity for 5,418 students in three shifts.
Before hundreds of people, including leaders, academics, and members of civil society, the Head of the Executive Branch cut the ribbon and unveiled the plaque, followed by a tour of the facilities of the new institution, which offers 1,207 places for the 2025-2026 academic year with 13 courses.
Located in the municipality of Muangueji, approximately 6 km from the city of Saurimo, the new facility features a modern infrastructure with 57 classrooms.
It has 11 specialized labs in the areas of engineering, nursing, anatomy, chemistry, electromechanics, physics, and mineralogy, as well as an auditorium with 320 seats, a fully equipped computer room, and two multi-sports fields.
It also houses 6 offices, 2 main classrooms, a library, support buildings room, a hospital, a cafeteria, and a refectory.
The institution, budgeted at US$44 mln, will offer 13 courses, including civil engineering, electricity, mining, mechanics, history, computer science, electromechanics, metallurgy, mathematics, pedagogy, nursing, biology, and administration and management.
It has an installed capacity for 5,400 students in three shifts (morning, afternoon, and evening) and currently has 1,207 places available.
The infrastructure was financed by the diamond trading company Sodiam E.P., as part of its social responsibility program.
Construction took three years and was undertaken by the national construction company Engevia, covering a total area of 94,400 square meters, with the built area covering 14,900 square meters.
This is the only educational institution in the province of Lunda-Sul, which is part of the Lueji A’nkonde University, which also includes three other universities in neighboring Lunda-Norte, namely the faculties of Law, Economics, and Pedagogy.
The Lunda-Sul government is planning to create satellite campuses in the municipal offices of Cacolo, Dala, and Muconda for higher education, in order to prevent young people from traveling to the provincial capital, Saurimo.
The town of Muangueji, home to the new Polytechnic Institute, was recently elevated to the status of a municipality under the new Political-Administrative Division.
