João Lourenço sees works on the Lubango ring road

Africa-Press – Angola. Construction work on the circular road that will bypass the city of Lubango, to make traffic more fluid, received, this Wednesday, the visit of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, who noted the progress of the works.

The project contemplates the execution of level intersections, roundabouts at connection points with other roads and complementary infrastructures.

Initiated in October 2014, the works are being supervised by three consortia, which include the Angola Roads Institute (INEA), supervised by the Ministry of Construction.

In the first phase, nine of the 38 kilometers that make up the ring road are already paved, in a project with Portuguese funding.

So far, 12 kilometers have been leveled and are awaiting asphalting, as well as a bridge, of the eight to be built, has been completed.

Another advance is the placement of public lighting poles along the route.

INEA data indicate that the work, with 200 workers, is taking place at a “good pace”, predicting that within 18 months they will be completed, with benefits for the traffic of people and goods, without going through the urban hull.

The road starts in the Arimba area and passes through the centralities of Eiwa and Quilemba, Senhora do Monte and Estádio Tundavala, connecting National Roads (EN) 105 and 280, on connections with Cunene, Huambo, Benguela and Namibe.

The road axis has a transverse profile with 2×2 lanes, a platform with a total width of 19.1 meters in urbanized areas or 21.5 meters in non-urbanized ones.

Within the framework of the project, the connections with the existing road network include the construction of an uneven junction and the remaining roundabout-type level junctions or hand-held entrances and exits.

The first phase of the work includes the construction of two lanes on each side, sidewalks, public lighting and pedestrian crossings in densely populated areas.

The second phase covers the road from the Mitcha neighborhood to the Tundavala area, in a six-kilometre stretch, and foresees the application of a flexible pavement.

The works on the Lubango Ring Road, which had been paralyzed for five years, resumed in the second quarter of 2022, after an announcement of the Portuguese financing line for their completion.

Until its stoppage, only 26 kilometers had been budgeted, with an initial value of four billion and 350 million kwanzas.

Every technical component, including the construction of a level crossing over the railway line in the commune of Arimba, public lighting (in areas considered urban), sidewalks and curbs are safeguarded.
