Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the MPLA, João Lourenço, defended, in Luanda, greater investment, preferably private, in the field of transport and distribution of electrical energy.

The Executive Branch holder also made this statement when speaking at the opening of the VI ordinary meeting of the MPLA Central Committee, adding that, even without the completion of the Caculo Cabaça dam, the country is producing around six thousand and four hundred megawatts, of which only consumes half.

He said he believes that the inclusion of the private sector in energy transport and distribution can contribute to the increase in industrial and domestic consumption and sales to neighboring countries.

He added that the surplus could be injected into the SADC network, to the south, as well as transported to the region of the so-called “Coper belt”, in Zambia, an extension of 1,300 kilometers, starting from Laúca.

João Lourenço said that the Executive is working on a solution to bring national electricity to Cabinda, from Soyo, and discontinue the use of thermal plants, which are large consumers of fossil fuels that are harmful to the environment.

Likewise, he praised the investments in the health sector, which for him represent “a true revolution” at all levels of care, despite recognizing that there is still a lot to be done in the field of basic sanitation in cities and towns and improving the diet. citizens through increased domestic production of food.

The leader also reaffirmed the need to encourage the practice of sport among youth, in the neighborhood and at school.

Asset Recovery

He highlighted that the Angolan State remains committed to recovering assets embezzled from the country, mentioning the almost two billion US dollars taken to different countries.

He said there have been contacts, since December 2023, with the authorities of the Swiss Swiss Confederation, where a large part of these resources are domiciled in banks, without the country having yet been able to review the amount.

Likewise in this area, he was pleased with the fact that the country had recovered 500 million US dollars that were in UK banks.

Special careers

In his intervention, he declared that greater attention is being paid to Higher Education, with the construction of new infrastructures for universities and higher institutes, with the training and admission of more professionals and, above all, with a better appreciation of the university teaching career.

He announced an increase in salaries for professionals in special careers, such as university teachers, researchers, military doctors and senior health technicians from June of this year.

World peace and stability

President João Lourenço said that the world is experiencing threats due to rapid and growing climate change and ongoing conflicts in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

He reaffirmed that the invasion and annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia violates and violates the Charter of the United Nations, international law, healthy coexistence between nations and the peace achieved with great sacrifice by the Allied forces when defeating Nazism in 1945.

On the other hand, João Lourenço declared that the solution of two sovereign states, Israel and Palestine, living peacefully side by side, is the only viable and recommended solution for peace in the region.

For this reason, he argued that the longer it takes to create and recognize the State of Palestine “the greater the suffering will be on both sides, both people”.

With this, he said he feared the escalation of the conflict throughout the Middle East region, which is feared could happen at any moment, advising Israel and Iran for maximum containment.

The Angolan head of state also stated that the moment demands the necessary wisdom and courage on the part of world leaders, international organizations and the United Nations, to put a definitive end to different conflicts and truly contribute to world peace and security.
