Africa-Press – Angola. Journalist João Marques Pontes, from Novo Jornal, based in the province of Benguela, is the winner of the second edition of the Catoca Journalism Prize.

The awards gala took place on Tuesday night, in Luanda, and was attended by several entities, including members of the Government, those responsible for the Catoca group and the media.

The professional won the prize with a report on the country’s coastline, which portrays the intricacies of undeclared and unauthorized fishing that has been occurring in recent days.

The work was recognized by the Minister of Fisheries, Carmem do Sacramento Neto, who warned of the danger that activities of this kind can cause to the sea.

Also in this edition, journalists from Televisão Pública de Angola (TPA) Fernanda Manuel, in the voice-over category, and Boaventura João (national language) were distinguished, while Mauro Guilherme from Rádio Ecclésia, placed in Lunda-Norte, was the best professional in eastern region of the country.

In reporting, the prize was shared by journalists Álvaro Victória, from Novo Jornal, and Pedro Narciso (Jornal de Angola).

From Jornal de Angola, professionals Arimateia Baptista from Huíla province, in the image category, and Ezequiel Cori (interview) were also distinguished.

The Catoca Journalism Prize is valued at 20 million and 500 thousand kwanzas, with the big winner receiving three million and those distinguished in the different categories receiving Kz two million and 500 thousand, a statuette and diploma.

109 professionals competed for the award, with only eight being distinguished in seven categories.

In this second edition, 22 journalists were honored, including Adérito Ferreira and Maria Stela da Silveira, Ana Lemos, Carlos Rosado, Adérito Kisunda, Salas Neto, Vânia Varela, Suzana Mendes, among others.

On the occasion, the president of the jury, Teixeira Cândido, called for compliance with ethical aspects in journalistic pieces, due to the fact that applications had been rejected for violating the principles of the adversarial process.
