Africa-Press – Angola. A lecture on the life and work of Agostinho Neto, the first President of Angola, marked this Friday, in Mbanza Kongo, the opening of the national hero’s journey in the province of Zaire, which will take place from the 10th to the 17th September, in the country.
When speaking on the topic, academic Agostinho Dias Zantoto stated that the commitment and dedication to the work of all citizens, in order to make the Angolan nation great, is the best way to honor Agostinho Neto.
He recalled that Neto was a fervent patriot, politician, doctor and humanist who dedicated his life to the liberation of the Angolan people from the Portuguese colonial yoke and from other countries in the continent.
He underlined that, the also greatest poet denounced, through his poems, the injustices to which Angolans and other subjugated African peoples were subject, also expressing the legitimate aspirations of the oppressed.
Agostinho Zantoto fundamentally asked the youth to reflect continuously on Neto’s ideals, teachings and vision to serve as inspiration for the enormous tasks of consolidating the Angolan nation and its development.
The lecture was attended by members of the Provincial Government of Zaire, representatives of MPLA mass organizations, defense forces, security and internal order, academics, among other guests.
António Agostinho Neto was born in the village of Caxicane, Icolo e Bengo, a town now part of the province of Luanda, on September 17, 1922, and died of illness in Moscow, capital of the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), on the 10th. September 1979.
As a result of his bravery and outstanding contribution to the country’s independence and territorial integrity, António Agostinho Neto was proclaimed a national hero and maximum exponent of Angolan nationalism.
