Lourenço Downplays Early Candidacies for MPLA Presidency

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the ruling MPLA, João Lourenço, on Tuesday downplayed, the aspirations of some leaders who expressed premature interest in running for the party leadership, as such issues do not affect the unity of the party.

“Before the congress, people are free to express their intentions, but only the candidate chosen by the party will be presented to the Constitutional Court,” clarified the MPLA leader in statements to the press, after the inauguration of the party’s new national headquarters.

The MPLA President reiterated that the issue will be discussed at the appropriate time, closer to the elections.

João Lourenço said the next ordinary Congress of the party, scheduled for next year, will fully respect the statutes, guaranteeing transparency and fairness in the process of choosing the candidate to be presented in the next general elections.

Regarding the MPLA’s performance in the 2022 elections, the President rejected the idea that the result was less than satisfactory.

He recalled that with 124 elected deputies out of a total of 220, the party holds an absolute majority that guarantees full legitimacy to govern.

“Compared to European countries, where governments operate with a minimal difference in deputies, the MPLA has a comfortable margin that allows it to govern with stability and autonomy,” Lourenço said.

When questioned about the MPLA’s programs to consolidate economic independence, sustainable development, and social justice, João Lourenço, also President of the Republic, reaffirmed that the party remains focused on serving the people and fulfilling the responsibilities assumed in each electoral cycle.

“The MPLA exists to serve the nation and responsibly fulfill the mandate that the people confer upon us in each electoral cycle,” he said.

Lourenço added that he will present more details on this aspect during the mass rally at the party’s anniversary on Saturday, on the outskirts of the Kilamba central area.

New Building

During the inauguration of the new headquarters building, the MPLA leader emphasized that the project aims to create better working conditions not only for the central leadership but also for all employees who worked in the old building.

“This project dignifies our party and strengthens our organizational capacity,” he highlighted.

Lourenço thanked everyone who participated in the construction of the new headquarters, including the design company, the contractor, the site supervisor, and the members of the Political Bureau secretariat.

The MPLA president stated that the inauguration marks a historic moment for the party and symbolizes institutional renewal and reaffirmation of the MPLA’s commitment to internal unity and the development of the country.
